SAN CARLOS BIKES NEWSLETTER

Nov 24, 2024 Biking News

Hi bikers.

Help save a life! Advocate for our bike bridge tonight

On November 16th, the Bay Area biking community lost our fellow rider, Andrea Vallebueno, on the dangerous Holly Street overpass.

As many of you know, the City had plans for a bike bridge 5 years ago that could have saved Andrea’s life. The project was shelved in 2019. If you care about this project, please make your voice heard at the City Council meeting on Monday.

  • Show up in person or on Zoom at Monday's San Carlos City Council meeting and make a comment to let the council know how important it is to get this project back on track.

  • If you can’t make the meeting but want to share a story or comment, send us a note here at San Carlos Bikes, and we’ll relay it to the council.

When canceled in 2019, this was a shovel-ready, $52-million project. Now the City says it will cost a lot more. It's a complex project that needs funding from many sources (SC, RWC, TA, CalTrans, and others). Let's keep the pressure on.

SC City Council meeting:

Don’t forget helmets and bike lights—decorative lights are encouraged!

Survey #1: Ease the pain of crossing the 101

Last chance! This survey closes on November 30th!

Living in San Carlos, you know that getting across the 101 is difficult for anyone walking or biking. For example, we’re right next to the Bay Trail, but to get there we need to cross four dangerous intersections and a parking lot.

Please SMCTA know how it is for you as a biker or walker to get across 101 anywhere from Burlingame down to San Carlos. You can also comment on nearby roads that need bike/walk improvements, like Old County Road and El Camino Real! Anything in the non-grayed-out part of the map is fair game. (Background info is at  https://www.smcta.com/news/san-mateo-county-transportation-authority-launches-101-corridor-connect-mid-county-survey )

  1. Go to https://101cc-mid.mysocialpinpoint.com/

  2. Zoom in on the map to show the road segment you want to comment on.

  3. Click Add Marker

  4. Click on the map where you want to call out a hazard or point to improve. (It’s okay if you’re commenting on an issue someone else has already called out. Just add another pin near the original pin, and add your comment.)

  5. Type your comment and hit Submit.

  6. Repeat until you've told them all your concerns

San Carlos and Redwood Shores folks, please consider using this to demand a safe route to walk and bike over 101 at the Holly Street interchange!

Survey #2: Close the SFO gap in the Bay Trail

Another last chance! This survey also closes on November 30th!

Speaking of the Bay Trail, there are many gaps in it that need to be connected. Right now, the MTC is planning to complete the Bay Trail where it passes San Francisco International Airport (SFO). They’re collecting public input on a feasible route connecting the Bay Trail through Millbrae and San Bruno where it passes the airport.
