Hi bikers! Here’s what’s happening as fall approaches:
School traffic is back! Be patient and help us work for safer routes
Students are back at our local schools, and because many of our schools lack safe, reliable bike and bus routes, car traffic is heavy! Let’s try to be patient with one another on the road, and please join us in giving kids and everyone safer ways to get to school.
The City of San Carlos has made some progress by
lowering school speed limits (see the City’s latest YouTube video with safe-routes-to-school (“SRTS”) tips and a progress report),
improving crosswalks, and
publishing preliminary SRTS maps at https://cityofsancarlos.org/srts
But progress remains too slow! With your help, we can speed things up:
Join our local SVBC Group for SC/Belmont to help us advocate here; and
Contact City Council to thank them for the progress so far (for example, the City will soon add a real crosswalk at Arroyo and Chestnut, connecting the Burton Park side to the Central Middle School side), and let them know where they should focus next.
New Downtown San Carlos Survey: Please give your input, due 8/31
Go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QHGM2NN to let the City what sort of downtown you’d like. See https://www.sancarlosdowntownplan.com/ if you’d like to learn a bit more before you fill out the survey.
Bikable downtown San Carlos: Come to the City meetings in September
The next steps in the San Carlos downtown planning will happen in September. During these 2 meetings, SC committees and council will review the updated plans and traffic studies. I'm guessing the design consultants will answer questions and address issues that were raised during the June council meeting when the consultants presented their initial plan options for our pedestrian zone and surrounding streets.
City announcement: Commissions and City Council to consider final street designs for downtown San Carlos:
Sept. 3, 2024 – All Commissions Meeting (In-person)
610 Elm Street, San Carlos Library, 2nd Floor Community Meeting Room at 7:00pm
Sept. 23, 2024 – City Council Meeting (In-person and Zoom)
600 Elm Street, San Carlos City Hall
Council Chambers at 7:00pm
For more information on how to join the City Council meeting virtually, check the 9/23/24 Council meeting agenda at https://www.cityofsancarlos.org/city_hall/public_meetings.php (it’s not posted as of this writing, but it will be soon).
Background: On June 10, the City Council reviewed the Downtown Advisory Committee’s (DTAC) recommended street designs. They asked city staff members to study the potential parking and traffic effects of the plans. They're likely to present their findings at the September meetings. Based on this, the Council will consider approving final street designs. To learn more, visit www.sancarlosdowntownplan.com or send questions to advanceplanning@cityofsancarlos.org

This year, SVBC is adding a highly requested 100-mile Century Route. It’s a perfect way for all you mileage hounds to finish off the season with a capstone ride! The route is comparatively flat (and most of the climbing is in the first half of the route) and follows the same initial route as the 56-mile option, making it a great route for those wanting to try their first century. What’s more, if you’re a seasoned rider, the relatively flat profile has the makings to be your fastest century! Best of all, you’ll be helping raise funds to campaign for a comprehensive and safe bike-transit route along ECR!
